There is a new technology that is giving hope to millions of people with hearing loss that want to have a fulfilling experience in the public realm. This technology is called a hearing loop and is a device that uses two very different types of tech to help highlight the need for better communication for the hearing impaired. This device is an affordable and easy-to-install solution that is being implemented around the world. That is why we will examine what a hearing loop is, how they work, and where you can find them right now.
What Is A Hearing Loop?
In the most basic terms, a hearing loop is a device that uses a large cable that is threaded around a room to conduct electromagnetic signals. This cable is used in conjunction with a device in a hearing aid in order to allow the individuals to hear sound more clearly no matter where they are in the room. These two pieces work in conjunction to block out much of the background noise and ambient frequencies that can be disruptive in the hearing process.
Where Are Hearing Loops?
Hearing Loops are already being used in various locations around the world. In the largest cities they are being used in meeting rooms and concerts halls so that every person in the room has an opportunity to hear sounds and speakers. You can also find versions of a hearing loop being implemented in vehicles like taxis and buses so that the individuals can communicate with the driver. This will bring better service to all people who are hearing impaired, and can also help with communication to the driver.
How Do Hearing Loops Work?
Hearing loops are rather un-sophisticated devices in the sense that there is not a lot of moving parts or assembly for them to work. The cable that runs throughout the area or room is linked to a sound receiver. Once the sound is received, it is sent though the cable as a signal that can be picked up by a telecoil. A telecoil is a piece of equipment that was originally used in a telephone so that the phone could operate farther away from the base.
Inside of most modern hearing aids and implants is a telecoil, which can be switched on at will by the user. Once this is active within the hearing aid, the individual hears the sounds that are gathered by the receiver, most likely a microphone, in a very clear and distraction free way. This allows presenters to reach out to their entire audience while allowing the hearing impaired individuals to sit anywhere in the room that they would like. It is widely hoped that there is more installations in buildings around the entire world over the next decade.
